When you’re with your Saboteur, you’re not here. The Saboteur, by its very nature, pulls you into the past because that’s where its foundations lie. Chances are slim that the present moment that apparently triggered your unpleasant inner monologue, actually holds any threats. It’s your history that holds the fears.
Think on this: you stand about to speak before a gathering of people. You gaze out at the faces, the preponderance of which are either neutral or even smiling, and something inside you freezes. It’s not anything inherent in these faces that’s triggering your fear, it’s more than likely an assumption, or a comparison you are making to a past experience, that is triggering your frozen intestines. In other words, this moment, with these people, is in a state of becoming over which you hold the outcome. There is no present failure, or heckling or whatever the fear in this moment. You get to decide where you are going right now. Who are these people? What does this moment hold?
So, if you are in the moment, present right now, experiencing what is actually here, there can be no Saboteur. It’s from the past that the roots of your fears grow forward. If you keep yourself present, with what is actually here, you can face and respond to what is real.
A few ways I stay present:
- monitoring my breathing
- connecting to people I love, either through thought or contact
- being in my body by doing something physical (dancing, running, yoga, etc.)
- focusing upon the people and relationships in my life rather than the things
How do you stay present? I’d love to hear from you!
Always infinite possibilities… always your choice.
